"Cuba is, however curious as it may seem, a country that has produced few yet excellent sculptors. And without any doubt, among its most outstanding is TOMAS OLIVA, a sculptor of world renowned accreditation. The exhibit announced in this catalogue will most likely serve to increase this duly accorded prestige; however, it will also make possible the direct acquisition of the work of this great sculptor for the revered collections of art lovers, and obviate the necessity of going through the ponderous channels of museums and art dealers.

Sculpture meets with two great difficulties: on the one hand, the high cost of one-of-a-kind pieces which require an enormously laborious effort in time and material, and on the other hand, sculpture competes with furnishings and necessary objects in space dimensions and distribution which is scarce in the modern ever-shrinking apartment.

Gloriously, Tomas Oliva has been able to surmount these two difficulties; first, by reproducing in limited editions of multiples some of his magnificent sculptures on a smaller scale and secondly, giving certain objects, such as tables, all the aesthetic dignity of great works of art.

Multiples, because of their reasonable price, allow that a piece of sculpture reach a collector of average means, while enormous pieces that are one-of-a-kind can be combined with a table-type object to hide its volume.

So then the dilemma of space assignment disappears, because form, texture and volume rest obediently and unperceivably below the innocent top of the table. OLIVA has achieved the ancient dream of marrying art and utility. He will be successful as what he does is singularly good."
